Identification and Treatment of Skin Allergies

Allergies can be defined as a hypersensitivity to some substance. This sensitivity can present itself in three basic ways:

1. Breathing system presentations, such as rhinitis and asthma.

2. Intestinal allergies such as diarrhea.

3. Skin allergies, such as dermatitis.

Skin allergies are very common, but can also be confused with other common skin irritations, such as insect bites. It’s even harder to determine where the allergic reaction came from. When you suddenly find a red patch of skin or a rash, ask yourself:

1. Does the irritated skin cover a large part of your body or only a small patch, such as the palm of your hand? If the latter, it may be due to a contact allergy. Stay away from the suspected allergen. If the marking is broader, over a larger section or even the entire body, suspect a food allergy – something carried with the blood flow through your body.

2. Have you eaten any unusual foods; something you’ve never eaten before? Have you started taking a new prescription medicine? Street drugs? How about vitamins or other food supplements?

3. Are you using a new detergent for washing your clothes?

It’s important to do this analysis as soon as you can, because it’s easy to forget what you ate or came in contact with as time moves on. You’re much more likely to hit on the source or your allergy if you think about it as soon as you notice the adverse reaction.

If you’re having a mild allergic reaction you can relieve skin redness and itching with a corticosteroid combined with antihistamine cream or ointment. Here are some topical corticosteroids used in treating allergies:

Betamethasone Dexmethasone Clobetasol Fluocinolene Clobetasone Desonide Flumethasone Difluocortolone Dexsoxymethasone

Some natural herbs are also used for allergy relief. For skin allergies, aloe is helpful. If you’ve got an aloe vera plant, a common houseplant, just break off a leaf and rub the juice liberally over the reddened skin. It will stop the itching and relieve the redness quickly.

Other prepared and packaged herbal remedies are helpful. As always, check the label to make sure they do not contain any drugs you’re trying to avoid. (And if they do, they must be classified as a drug, not an herbal remedy by law.)

Most of the time skin allergies are easily relieved and not too serious to your overall health. However, you should consult your doctor in any of these situations:

1. You’ve tried a topical treatment and it did not work. You see no reduction of the redness, swelling or rash.

2. You have another more severe allergic reaction in addition to your skin allergy such as difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting, fast heartbeat or headache. These symptoms could be precursors for the often-deadly anaphylactic shock and need to be treated by a medical professional immediately.

It’s a good idea to get an allergy test today. It’s fairly simple. An allergy specialist will give you a “scratch” test where he or she will introduce very small amounts of common allergens into your skin. After about a half hour, he’ll be able to tell if you have adverse skin reactions to any of the allergens he used. These tests are not painful or harmful, but they can go a long way to keeping you healthy, since you’ll know what substances you need to avoid.

Five Warning Signs of Alcoholism

Most of us now understand that alcoholism is a disease, and no one intentionally tries to catch a disease. But the cause of alcoholism is quite readably discernable – drinking alcohol. Yet most adults drink, at least occasionally, despite this knowledge.

Why take the risk? Of course there are pleasurable feelings associated with alcohol consumption. It loosens the inhibitions and makes it easier for some to meet and talk to new people. The fact that it’s such a large precursor to such an insidious disease, well, most people are sure they don’t drink THAT much. Little do they know that they may be on the way to a bad case of alcoholism right now. One person’s social drinking is another’s first stage of alcoholism. Not only is it hard to tell who alcoholism will hit and who it won’t, but those who are being affected will do everything in their power to deny it to others, and often to themselves. This makes it even harder to diagnose.

But there are warning signs. If you’re worried about early states of alcoholism yourself, think about these things:

1. If you’re starting to be concerned about the level of your drinking, you probably should be. Even if you’re not dwelling on these types of thoughts, but they just occur to you from time to time, it’s an indication you may have an abuse problem.

2. People who know and care about you are starting to mention their concerns over your drinking. Perhaps they don’t even mention it, but you start to notice them steering you away from drinking-related activities. A sure sign of impending or current alcoholism is having had multiple run-ins with the law for alcohol-related offenses.

3. If you’re drinking socially, you may lose some inhibitions, but your personally doesn’t change. When you’re suffering from alcoholism, drinking brings about very specific mood changes. These can vary from person to person, but could take the form of silliness, happiness, depression, irritability, or even something more aggressive and dangerous.

4. Your behavior changes when drinking to the point where you do things you would never consider doing when sober.

5. You move from an occasional, social drinker, to a regular or repetitive one. If you’re drinking an amount exceeding legal limits every time you drink, and that is starting to happen more and more often, you definitely need to take a closer look at your relationship with alcohol.

From this list, alcoholism is not as far away as you thought. Plenty of people meet more than one of these five criteria, yet don’t deem themselves alcoholics. But remember, the alcoholic will deny it as long as possible. He/she may need a drink every day, meet all the criteria above, and still swear up and down that he could stop any time, but he can’t, and everyone around him knows it.

If you look at the above list and see yourself described, don’t run away. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Alcoholism is a disease of addiction, and the best single thing you can do to start on the road to recovery is join Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The addict in you will balk, but go to a meeting. Take charge. Take your life back.

2. Go to an exploratory meeting with an addictions counselor. They will help explore the path that led your to alcoholism and make you clearly see where your addiction will eventually lead you.

3. Just stop drinking. Although, fair warning, this is difficult and doesn’t work for most people. You probably need the help of counseling or AA to rid yourself of your addiction. But maybe you’re not far enough along, or maybe you ARE someone with the will power to pull it off.

4. Slow your drinking. Again, this probably won’t work; it doesn’t in most cases. However, if you’re just starting to worry about alcoholism, it’s possible you can still turn from the beginning problem stages back to the moderate social drinking you used to do.

5. If none of these work for you, check yourself into a more intense “drying out” or in-house addiction treatment.

Alcoholism is a progressive disease, and if you have the early warning signals and don’t do anything, your health, your family, your career; indeed your entire life will be adversely affected. Take action while you can!

Stay Away From Alcohol Abuse and Get Healthy

People with a drinking problem take the substance to get a comfortable feeling. Alcohol might help them deal with issues of trauma, stress, or physical pain. By drinking alcohol they might be getting temporary relief of the loneliness they feel, depression, or stress in their life.

Commonly people have know that alcohol can cause serious problem and even dangerous or life-threatening. There are some term that linked to alcohol abuse such as binge drinking, and alcoholism. Binge drinking means having five or more drinks in one session for men and four or more for women. It also means simply drinking to get drunk. Commonly, It is the drinking problem for young people, under age 21.

In fact, people who abuse alcohol have fewer consequences than the others that have alcohol dependence . It means drink too much and suffer social and health consequences, but never completely lose your control over the drinking like in alcohol addiction.

But it isn’t a safe way to use alcohol, although it isn’t as serious as alcoholism. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence says 18 million American have this problem. Drinking and driving cause almost 50% of all traffic fatal accidents in the United States.

Be careful binge drinking can lead you to alcoholic. If alcohol begins to cause problems like missing time at school or work, neglecting child or household responsibilities or trouble with the law and the drinking continues anyway we called it alcohol abuse. Mostly binge drinking turns into alcohol abuse when the binge drinkers get pressure or stress in their life. Infrequent drink with friends can turn into more serious drinking problem so quickly if we can’t manage ourselves.

The infection of Hepatitis C can be worse if the patients drink alcohol. Actually the relationship between of an infected person and drinking for developing alcoholic hepatitis is not necessarily linear. In some cases, hepatitis becomes chronic and may lead to cirrhosis (scarring process on liver), which is generally associated with excessive alcohol consumption.

Serious health conditions such as loss of muscle tissue, loss of memory, and loss of testosterone can cause by chronic drinking problem. In fact it also affects every cell within your body, and if this condition stays chronic, it will start to kill cells, and once a cell is dead, it stays dead. It is a toxin that will come in your bloodstream and run into every organ and cell in your body.

Chronic abuse bothers the absorption of important vitamins and mineral. Dehydration also can cause by alcohol abuse. People that abuse alcohol will have the narrow limits of each ion in our body, such as calcium, sodium, and potassium. Lack in concentration of these ions can produce the excess thirst which may lead to muscle cramps and sudden dizziness or fainting spells.

Watch out, this addiction can cause some severe health problems such as cancer, pancreatitis, high blood pressure, miscarriage, heart failure or stroke, alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver and even death. People must care about their own alcohol problem, rather than excuse the behavior.

How To Find The Right Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center

When you, a family member or loved one is battling against the demons associated with drug and/or alcohol abuse, rehabilitation is needed to get back on a healthy track. Turning to the healing properties of a drug rehab or alcohol rehab center can bring about the lifestyle and behavioral changes associated with leaving negative influences to the wayside.

There are numerous drug and alcohol rehab centers across the United States. Sometimes, a patient may even choose treatment outside of the country. Rehabilitation is a very emotional and a mental roller coaster that takes every ounce of restraint and focus. It is the responsibility of alcohol and drug rehab centers to find the medium and motivation for each patient to embrace recovery. Each and every individual that walks through the door of a clinic or enters a program is unique.

Different Clinic and Program Approaches

Since no two patients are alike, drug and alcohol rehab programs and procedures differ. While some rely heavily on prescription drugs and other medical techniques, there are other methods of treatment that utilize holistic or natural approaches. When evaluating a potential drug or alcohol rehab center, there are several different types of treatment programs to consider. Substance abuse is a delicate issue and each drug of choice is dealt with in a different manner. For instance, sleeping pill addiction will not be treated in the same way as crystal meth addiction.

One of the main decisions regarding the type of alcohol or drug rehab center to consider is the length of necessary treatment. With short-term rehab clinics, a patient may become a resident and undergo various medical approaches for several weeks. They may also receive drug-free outpatient services. When longer-term care is needed, several outpatient treatments are available as well. A patient may also choose to live in a residential community treatment center to ensure continue drug-free success. Some residents may choose or need to spend years at these types of facilities.

The issue of medication and other drug treatment options come into play when choosing a drug rehab clinic, as seen through what is called maintenance treatment. For example, a heroin addict may receive an oral dose of methadone to help block the effects of their abused drug of choice. The methadone helps to eliminate the cravings that many addicts encounter through physiological demands on their body. Some people are leery of methadone treatments because this drug in itself can be addicting.

When it comes time to locate the best drug rehab and alcohol rehab centers within your grasp, doctors and other health professionals will give you what is called a referral. You may receive one or two to choose from, but they are usually the most viable options of treatment for you to consider. When budget is of no concern, some people will look into treatment options both near and wide. Some drug and alcohol rehab centers are more private than others, offering certain luxuries that state officials cannot afford. There are numerous brochures and websites to scan when you are able to pay more for your treatment options.

What to Expect With Treatment

Very rarely do you see drug rehabilitation without some sort of approach towards psychological repair. Even though drugs can be purged from the physical parts of the patient, it is the mental barriers and breakdowns that continue the vicious cycle of drug abuse. Most drug rehab and alcohol rehab programs will treat the mind, body and soul of a patient. This is the best approach towards increasing the success rate for when patients are released onto the world.

It is also much healthier for the patient to receive well-rounded treatment so that they may achieve stronger, more positive outcomes. It is the goal of rehab centers to make sure patients equip themselves with the tools and strength needed to resist temptation and face the threat of relapse.

While at a drug or alcohol rehab center, you will encounter a trained professional who knows the ins and outs of drug addictions. Physicians and therapists become important fixtures on the road to recovery. They will ask you many different questions and may even perform a series of medical tests. This will assist in the accurate assessment of your personal characteristics. It will aid in deciding on the appropriate drug rehabilitation program that you will benefit the most from. You could face inpatient, outpatient, residential, and/or short-stay treatment.

Helping Rehabilitated Patients Succeed

It is the responsibility of the newly rehabilitated patient to take control over the things that affect their life. Surrounding themselves with positive influences and adhering to outpatient counseling and programs is a must. Family and friends should be supportive and aware that the potential of relapse is never too far behind. A circle of support and encouragement is crucial to long term success.

For a newly released drug or alcohol rehab patient, one day at a time never made more since than now. Each morning should be greeted with individual care and concern. They may need a lot of help to continue their success. Love, understanding, and support is all friends and family can give; the rest is up to the rehabbed individual.

Alternative Medicine: Is It Really Worth The Risk?

There has been a surge in recent years of people looking to alternative medicine for treatment of illness. It is a practice that generates a great deal of controversy both inside and outside of the traditional world of medicine, and an issue that some experts say does not receive enough attention.

What Is Alternative Medicine? The most commonly accepted definition of alternative medicine is a treatment or substance that is untested or unproven using accepted scientific standards. Common types of alternative medicine include herbs, supplements, therapies and activity programs that fall outside of traditional medical practice and are questionable in terms of safety and effectiveness. For example, acupuncture, massage, meditation, herbal teas, and plant extracts are quite popular forms of alternative medicine that many medical doctors say are ineffective at best and dangerous at worst for some conditions.

Why Is Alternative Medicine So Popular? Alternative medicine has grown in popularity as more and more people face the inevitable aches, pains and illnesses that come with aging. In some cases, traditional medicine has failed to produce a cure and patients go in search of other options for treatment of their illness. In other cases, patients believe strongly that natural methods of treating illness are superior to traditional medicine so they seek treatment from alternative practitioners rather than medical doctors.

The Risks Of Alternative Medicine Some of the greatest risks associated with alternative medicine come from the use of substances that are untested, ineffective, and sometimes unsafe. The makers of such substances often make exaggerated claims of effectiveness and/or misrepresent the science associated with the substance in order to convince consumers to buy their product, even if use of the product may endanger the consumer’s health or well-being.

For example, some herbal remedies are promoted as having the ability to improve memory, increase metabolism, or even cure diseases like cancer and heart disease. In practice, though, some remedies may actually cause physiological harm when taken in excessive amounts, ephedra being one well-publicized recent example. Another risk is that a person with a serious condition such as cancer, heart disease or some other chronic illness will forego more traditional treatments that have been proven effective in favor of alternative treatments that are of questionable value. They may be literally risking their lives by treating illness with unproven alternative medicines rather than scientifically validated traditional medicines. Another common risk associated with alternative medicine is when a patient uses both traditional and alternative methods of treatment but does not disclose this to their medical doctor. It is very common for prescription medications to produce negative interactions when taken at the same time as alternative medicines like herbs and plant extracts. These interactions may range from diminished effectiveness all the way up to and including toxicity that causes serious harm. If the medical doctor is not made aware of any other substances the patient may be taking, he or she may unknowingly prescribe a medication that produces and unwanted or harmful interaction.

How To Recognize Potentially Risky Alternative Medicines A good rule of thumb to follow is that if a product, substance or therapy sounds too good to be true then it probably is. While you may already be familiar with this cliché, it is worth repeating because it is often true when it comes to alternative medicine. Beware of any product that claims to be “miraculous”, “a scientific breakthrough”, “amazingly effective”, “an ancient remedy”, “a secret formula” or possess some other attribute that supposedly makes it superior to more traditional medicines.

If you are considering an alternative form of therapy, such as reflexology, acupuncture, biofeedback or the like, carefully check the qualifications of the therapy practitioner before undergoing treatment. What kind of training has he or she received, and is that training from a reputable source? Research the treatment itself to determine if it is something that has been scientifically tested, evaluated, and found to be effective. Don’t take the practitioner’s word for it, and don’t accept at face value the claims of anyone who stands to make money or benefit in some way if you choose to undergo the treatment.

Finally, ask your doctor about any form of alternative medicine that you are considering. If you don’t feel comfortable doing so then find a doctor with whom you feel more at ease and discuss the alternative treatment you are considering. Remember that a trained medical professional has the education and experience to help you make good, safe decisions about whether or not to use alternative medicine.
